Code Nation is celebrating ten years — a major milestone in our mission to connect youth underrepresented in tech with opportunities to prosper in their cities’ booming economies. We have been at this for a decade serving 7,485 students in 97 schools and partnering with 145 companies across 3 regions. We are building a movement to help more young people grow from tech lovers into tech leaders, with a focus on inspiring the next generation who will carry on the work of building a more inclusive industry and make technology that better serves everyone.
This celebration gives us time to honor the incredible students we taught, recognize our tech professionals who brought their passion and knowledge of coding into schools as our volunteer teachers, and reflect on the meaningful contributions that our company partners have made by inviting our students into their offices, and through their investments of time and resources demonstrated that they were welcome.
10 Years of Connecting Communities
and Creating Opportunities
The tech industry was booming, and yet only a handful of public schools offered computer science education, ultimately excluding historically underrepresented groups – young Black, Latine/x and women students – from the economic wealth and job security tech careers have to offer. Our program during those first weeks – bringing tech professionals out of their offices and into public schools – was new and exciting. We saw the power of fostering authentic connections between high schoolers discovering a passion for computer science and the volunteer educators who could help them pave a pathway to a career in tech.
We’re celebrating 10 years of Code Nation by sharing the stories of our people: students, alums, volunteers, partners, and the committed staff who bring our vision to life. We’ll also share ways that you can contribute to our mission through volunteering, donating, partnering, and advocating for more diversity in tech.
