About Code Nation

Code Nation is a community of high school students, technologists, teachers, business leaders, and other champions. A movement spanning cities, cultures, and industries, our community builds bridges across social and economic divides and unites people with the power to change each others’ lives.

Code Nation equips students with the skills, experiences, and connections that together create access to careers in technology. With a volunteer teaching cohort of over 300 professional web and software developers and a network of school and company partners, we provide coding courses and work-based learning programs to students who attend under-resourced high schools. Our industry-aligned curriculum and vast network of supporters provide students with the tech skills and social capital they need to break into the tech workforce.

During the 2019-2020 school year, Code Nation pivoted to reach 1,630 students in 72 programs across the Bay Area, Chicago, and NYC, 100% virtually. Software developers collectively volunteered more than 45,000 hours to provide in-person and remote learning in support of Code Nation’s mission in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and NYC.

The Role

Code Nation seeks our first Managing Director, Programs who will assume leadership of our program and management of our five-person national program team responsible for curriculum and instruction, data and evaluation, and programming for the alumni of our programs. The Managing Director, Program will be responsible for setting a long-term vision for our program, leading the development of our program against that vision, and creating an aligned plan for data collection and analysis to help us measure and maximize our program’s success. The ideal candidate is a seasoned manager of teams, has a strong understanding of how to set a vision for a program, will be able to evolve that vision as the organization grows, and will arrive having created and/or held an organizational vision for program evaluation in their previous work.

After spending a number of years shaping our small program in New York City, our organization has grown in recent years including both expansion to Chicago and the Bay Area and growing our program in New York City. During this time of growth, we have added a small and talented “national” team responsible for core functions (DEI, development, finance/accounting, HR, talent), program support (curriculum/instruction, data/evaluation), and recently added staff who are beginning to think about support and programming to the alumni of our program. Our organization is oriented around the deep belief that programs could and should be centered on local context. In this spirit, we aim to balance controlling the “right stuff” at the center while creating room for our regions to operate with autonomy as they execute the program. In our endeavors to build in this innovative way, we have predictably encountered some key challenges in our program implementation including alignment of program components, implementation efficacy, and coherent vision for program evaluation.

We are eager to hire a Managing Director, Programs who is energized to help us build a great program model, is a strategic thinker, sees the value of building an autonomous program that is supported by the organization’s center (rather than controlled by it), and is an empathetic and effective leader of teams. Our program is on the threshold between start-up and scaling, and the strongest candidates will have a depth of knowledge of curriculum, instruction, train-the-trainer best practices, learning management systems, and program evaluation in the context of a matrixed national/regional program model. They will spend the 2022-2023 school year setting a long-term vision for our program and conducting continuous monitoring and evaluation of current programs. This person will lead our organization towards that vision in partnership with the students in our program, the alumni of our program, our volunteers, our partners, and our staff. Our ideal Managing Director, Programs will be energized by the opportunity to lead our organization through the process of codifying our current processes, setting a vision for the future of our program, and helping us to build towards that future state in a way that is fully aligned to our values.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 – $140,000.


The primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Program Vision, Strategy, and Leadership

  • Build trusting relationships with national and regional stakeholders that are centered on understanding their needs
  • Audit existing program elements to map and continuously evolve a full assessment grounded in impact (i.e. SWOT Analysis)
  • Create a clear vision for Code Nation’s programs that is rooted in impact, efficient evaluation, and a thoughtful balance of standardization and autonomy
  • Invest stakeholders in the program vision through continued relationship building, listening, and communication
  • Design and lead a long-term plan to evolve our programs, with a curious, iterative, evidence-based, and student-centered approach
  • Collaborate with the CEO and Managing Directors to set the organizational strategy, support national fundraising activities, cultivate equity-centered organizational culture and develop org-wide policies and programs that can attract, retain, and improve employee experiences across all regions

Team Management & Development

  • Lead national program team through identification of clear work streams, division of responsibility across the team, and management towards outcomes
  • Foster a highly effective work culture with strong leadership development for all staff; provide quality check-ins, coaching, feedback, performance training, professional development, and performance evaluations to sustain the internal talent required for the long-term success of the region.
  • Facilitate Program Leadership meetings to appropriately engage and collaborate with local Program Directors. Design inclusive decision-making processes to center student voices and local needs while maintaining effective levels of standardization
  • Create near-, medium-, and long-term staffing plans that ensure the national program team is staffed and managed to:
    • Develop strong curriculum
    • Support and train regional program staff (to train volunteers, implement the program, and other needs as determined)
    • Evaluate programs across the organization
    • Drive alumni engagement and outcomes

Program Evaluation and Impact

  • Audit existing data and evaluation practices and set a vision for evolving those practices to ensure:
    • There is a clear vision for data collection tied to clear impact statements and organizational storytelling to internal and external audiences
    • Data is housed in a uniform, accessible way across the organization
    • Clear, measurable, efficient KPIs are established and progress towards the KPIs is tracked
    • Bias is reduced in data collection and evaluation
  • Shepherd the organization to routinely use data to evaluate programs and inform decision making, take action, and set direction

Serve as Organizational Champion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Serve as a strong leader and advocate for DEI and Code Nation core values
  • Examine our program and curriculum with a critical eye and chart a bold path forward in pursuit of more fully living into these values
  • Manage reporting teams and influence others to challenge elements of white supremacist culture in our practices to drive our pro-Black, anti-racist mission

Program Partnerships & Communications

  • Identify key players in the coding education and workforce development spaces (e.g. corporate partners, peers at other organizations, experts, etc.)
  • Pursue and build authentic and collaborative relationships with external audiences to build both support for Code Nation and relevant knowledge

Skills and Qualifications

Success in this position will require, but not be limited to, the following proven experiences and skills:

What you’ve accomplished (required):

  • 10+ years of professional experience including 3+ years experience managing full-time staff, and 2+ years experience in a senior leadership position in a nonprofit education organization, school district, foundation, government agency, or for-profit organization
  • Work experience in a matrixed organization with a national/regional program model (or similar)
  • Experience managing more than one program work streams
  • Experience setting a vision for a program at the national level
  • Experience with programs that have each of these program elements:
    • Centralized program design & curriculum development
    • Robust program evaluation
    • Train-the-trainer program elements
    • Learning management system
  • Experience implementing programs in one or more of these contexts:
    • Coding, computer science, or technology education programs
    • Workforce development programs
    • Programs that include volunteer management
    • Out-of-school time (or similar) academic programs for secondary or college students

Other things you might have accomplished (preferred) or would be excited to learn here:

  • Experience setting and/or holding the vision for program evaluation
  • While our ideal candidate has experience in the coding, computer science education, and/or technology education spaces, we are open to someone who is a seasoned program leader and eager to enter into these spaces through this role
  • Skills you have developed and knowledge you have acquired:
  • Ability to break down vision and direction of work into actionable steps, leverage manager for strategic support rather than execution accountability, and the ability to organize and track multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities
  • Successfully build capacity in others (e.g. development staff, program staff, etc.) to produce strong outputs in programs, partnerships, fundraising, communications and/or marketing initiatives in a way that inspires fulfillment and belonging in others
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across regional matrixes and departmental functions
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to diverse audiences in clear, concise, and linear ways
  • Deep comfort communicating about issues pertaining to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and inequities in education and tech
  • High level of self-awareness, humility, interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • A baseline comfortability with tech concepts and terminology

What You Can Expect

The salary range for this position is $95,000 – $140,000. Code Nation has a high-performing culture characterized by our desire to provide our staff members with the support, resources, and information they need to be successful in our organization and in the non-profit field in general. Code Nation employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and, if hired, present proof of vaccination by start date.

Additionally, National Team members currently have the flexibility to work from home with the exception of required, in-person team meetings, and two to three professional development/org-wide training events per year, all contingent upon COVID-19. National Team members will also have access to a coworking space in their respective region to use at their discretion.
